Ad Astra was awarded a contract by ICE, Costa Rica’s state-owned electricity and telecommunications company, to diagnose the conditions of the existing on-site hydrogen production facility at the Miravalles I and II geothermal power plants, evaluate its compliance with recent applicable codes and best-practices in hydrogen safety, and propose a complete relocation and redesign of the system.

The hydrogen in these power plants is used to cool the electrical generators. The scope of the redesign performed by Ad Astra included physically relocating the hydrogen generators to a new site with improved safety conditions, upgrading most of the piping and instrumentation, developing updated protocols for the operation of the system and providing on-site training to ICE’s personnel.
